IPL 2022: DC Defeats The Confident KKR In Match 19!

Confident KKR came into match 19 against Delhi Capitals, but they were kept under pressure throughout the match, which witnessed a very comfortable victory by Delhi Capitals. Kolkata, after winning the toss, opted for bowling. After ‌twenty overs, Delhi set a target of 216 for Kolkata to chase. Kolkata got wrapped up in 19.4 overs for 171 runs, and the one-sided victory fell upon DC.

The first over of the KKR innings symbolizes how they would be dominated later on in this match. Venkatesh Iyer and Ajinkya Rahane, the opening partners, started with two runs in the first over. On the next over, V. Iyer was hitting a couple of sixes and a boundary against Khaleel Ahmed, but at the third ball of the third over, he flicked a lengthy delivery – the ball went in the air as a catch at backward square leg. As V. Iyer departed, KKR skipper Shreyas Iyer came into the middle.

At the very first ball, Shreyas Iyer eased the ball through cover; it was followed, however, by another one against Shardul Thakur. On the fifth ball of the fifth over, Rahane was caught as he heaved a ball that landed behind mid-on through a top edge. Iyer and Rana were trying to score, but terrific tight bowling made the overs barren for KKR; on the seventh over, a single boundary was followed by an over the boundary in the eighth over. As a result, the run rate remained much lower than required. However, the tenth over witnessed a boundary by Iyer at his back foot, followed by an over the boundary by Rana. After the eleventh over, KKR was at 101/2. Iyer, the skipper, got his fifty with a big hit at the penultimate ball and was stumped at the last delivery of the over.

After Iyer departed, the whole responsibility was on Russell and Billings, and the required run rate then was almost 14. At the fourteenth over, Billings reverse-sweeped Patel through the third man boundary, and it was followed by a tossed up over boundary; the beautiful way he played it by going inside out – shows the batter of him. But the match was gradually going out of KKR’s grip. At the fourth ball of the over, sweeping Billings had a top edge and was caught; 83 was required then by 32 balls.

After Russell and Billings, the wicket started falling more frequently. Finally, Kolkata was wrapped up within 171 before two balls away. At a certain point in the match, it became evident that Delhi would win.

Delhi bowlers have done spectacularly well; mainly, Kuldeep Singh has been awarded the man of the match for having four precious wickets by bowling four overs. However, as is evident from Iyer’s post-match interview, Kolkata made a primary mistake by opting for bowling. He said the cause of the decision was that Kolkata wanted to chase as successfully they had done so in three previous matches.
